This is an absolutely stunning and large example which is embellished with an enormous number of clear and sapphire glass stones. It dates towards 1880 and would have once graced the noble head of a life-sized Madonna Santos.
The bottom band is bezel set with 27 clear (1/4") glass stones. A very delicate design, created by gilded brass scrolls and arabesques weave above the bottom band. Five large (1/2") sapphire stones and sixty three (1/4") sapphire stones embellish this beautifully executed scroll work. There are three large stars which are set into the top of the crown. The two side stars are flat, and completely filled with bezel set clear and sapphire glass stones. The central star has a doubled form with a small star mounted on top of a larger background star (the background star is missing one mount and glass stone at the left bottom arm). Both levels are set with clear and sapphire glass stones. Four stylized fleur de lis alternate between the stars (two small and two large). They are set with large sapphire rhinestones centers and clear glass stone arms. The band has seven notches at the back for adjusting the width of the band.
The diadem measures: 3 1/2" tall at the middle center cascading down to 1 5/8" at the last large sapphire stone. The diameter set at the first notch is 5 3/4", at the last notch 6 1/2". The diadem is in very good antique condition: there are the usual very slight irregular bends as is typical in a gilded brass crown because of age and use (these can be manipulated as wished). There is one missing mount and stone as stated above.
It is a magnificent antique example with a stunning presence.
