This is an exquisite, old sacred heart voto dating towards 1870-1880). It originates France.
The honest simpleness of this ex voto allows the gilded patina to shine. The voto box heart shaped form is very pronounced giving the voto a height thickness of 1" from the tabletop. The face is engraved with a central "M" which has a large cross rising from it's center. The engraving is done is 1/8" marks giving the characters a solid wideness. The flame is smaller (this is typical of older votos) and deeply grooved. There is a ring on the back for threading a ribbon or chain. The interior is heavily gilded (wear to gilt on bottom side). The patent mark, "depose" (late 19th century) is marked on the side edge.
This voto is in solid and good antique condition. It measures: 3 1/2" x 2".
These old votos have a special ambiance as they were used to hold prayers, intentions and thanksgivings. This is a fine example of a nineteenth century French sacred heart voto reliquary box.
