An amazing and breathtaking example, it measures 8" tall and 4 1/2" wide. We were privileged to purchase this from a lifetime Sacred Heart collection in Paris. It dates between 1880-1890.
The size of this piece indicates that it would have been purchased and used by a particular parish to ornament an altar space or other large niche devotional space.
It is of gilded brass/metal and has the utmost quality in metal work and form. The outer edge is 1/4" wide and set an abundance of large clear glass stones. Each stone is bezel set with prongs. A fancy twisted braid edge forms the outer channel, adding an extra bit of elegance. The very large flame is set with sixty bezel set glass stones which range in size from tiny to very large. The domed face/door has a large gilded ormolu initial, "M" for Mary. It is set with the tiniest of glass stones (four stones missing). The heart opens with a tiny door-pull to reveal an very brilliant glowing gilded center. The back of the heart has a metal panel with a heat stamped pattern of filigree, arabesques and flowers. There is a chain at the top of the flame use in hanging the voto.
The voto stands 1 3/4" tall when resting on the tabletop. It is in very good antique condition: the patina is glowing, the stones all present with the exception of the four stated above, the door works properly, the shape and form intact. The only wear noted is slight indentations above the hinge from the door opening and closing over the years.
This Sacred Heart is a rare find and an extraordinary religious example of the period.
