An elegant hand colored Sacred Heart lithograph is the centerpiece in this monastery/convent work. It originates from a religious collection and dates towards 1880.
The beautiful oval lithograph depicts Jesus Christ revealing his Sacred Heart. The lithograph is fine and detailed; the colors rich and luminous. The oval is framed by two very delicate gilded rolled paper channels. A row of pearl beads is next, framed by a final large round frame of heart- shaped gilded scrolls (small bit hearts missing at top right : they have fallen to interior bottom). The central design is framed by gilded paper flowers and gilded metal tendrils. Hand cut textured gilt paper leaves intermingle with the flowers.
The design is placed under a thick piece of glass. It sits into a "box" frame which is of hard paper board. The exterior of the frame is covered by damask fabric and gilded metal braid. The back retains the original paper. This reliquary was designed to be viewed on a tabletop or a small tripod stand. It measures 6" x 4" x 3/4" thick. It is in very good antique condition; it is solid and the glass has no cracks or chips. Note the small area in the design mentioned above. This reliquary has never been opened.
It is a sumptuous reliquary reminding us of the Sacred Heart. The delicateness of the work and the love and devotion that produced this piece give it a special peaceful ambiance. It is a lovely example of devotional art.
