This is a spectacularly large candle shade ornament which measures 8" tall x 6 1/2" wide. This beautifully shimmering heart would have been hung or mounted near a statue (which resided in a niche) during festival days, with a lit candle behind it. The ruby light which radiated from the glass would have had a magical effect. This sacred heart ornament dates towards 1880. It was part of a very fine collection originating in Paris.
The base form is of gilded brass; the shining rays each have a textured gilded brass frame. Inside each ray is a row of bezel set clear paste stone (the stones on average are 1/4" in diameter). Between the rays and the central heart are a bezel set row of large ruby glass stones.
The gilded brass mount for the glass heart raises upward 1/2". This high mount gives an extra depth to the ruby glass heart when viewed from the front. There is a row of bezel set clear glass stones framing the heart. A delicate fleur de lis mount holds the rich ruby colored beveled glass heart. The etched initials " IHS" (the initials for the Holy Name of Jesus) are surrounded by an thorny crown at the center. The flame is set with ruby red glass stones.
It is in very good antique condition. There are no missing stones. The ruby glass has no cracks or chips.
The extensive amount of red and clear stones combined with the large crimson heart center make this sacred heart a true jeweled treasure.
