This antique Victorian sterling silver pin has a stylized swag design that has applied silver elements to give it added dimensionality. The swag has incised lines that outline the gentle curve of the design and also imitates small leaves. Above and below there are smooth wires twisted in c and s curves that give the illusion of winding vines. The center of the pin has a three dimensional twisted wire that sits diagonally across the pin almost as if it is a tie that is fastening the vines that threaten to escape from the central motif. Curving fern like leaves in silver are applied to the swag to complete this little pin that is just full of wonderful decorative elements!
The pin is hallmarked on the back. It has the sideways anchor symbol to indicate it was made in Birmingham, England and the letter "W" to date the pin to 1896. There is also a Lion Passant to indicate it is sterling silver and a maker's mark of "APPA".
The pin weighs 3 grams and measures 1 7/8 inches x 5/8 inch (5 cm x 1.5 cm). It is in great condition!
