This fabulous locket has two sides decorated with such different motifs it is hard to believe it was meant for the same person! I'd like to think this locket was a memento that a lady wore everyday to remind her of her loved one at sea. Yet she could turn it around and have a lovely ornately decorated image if she wanted to wear it for another occasion.
One side of the the 14 karat gold locket has an anchor which is placed on a coiled rope design. Quite clearly a reference to the sea. The other side is quite detailed and finely decorated. At the center is a plain lozenge shape that could have an initial engraved on it. Surrounding this are four flower and leaf designs. The rest of the space has a textured surface that is bordered by incised lines at the edge. The interior has a glass frame on the left side.
The locket is not marked, but tested as 14 karat gold. I tested is in several places and several time with both an electronic tester and acid. I was concerned because the the rope design on one side has a slightly rose gold color and there appeared to be some silver as well. I believe that the gold rope may have a slightly higher copper content, hence the color. I also think that a bit of the solder used to attach the anchor seeped from the sides slightly. All this is to say it is 14 karat gold.
The locket is 30 mm x 20 mm (1 1/8 inches x 6/8 inch) with the attached ring, excluding the jump ring. It is 5 mm (3/16 inch) thick and weighs 4.4 grams. It is in great condition.
