This antique Victorian beetle bar pin exemplifies the Victorians interest in the natural world. The 19th century was a time for classifying and naming all sorts of flowers, plants, and yes, insects. The use of the natural greenish-black agate gives the impression of a beetle's natural exoskeleton in both color and texture.
The bar of the pin measures 3.4 cm. and the beetle measures 2.3 cm. by 1.5 cm. It has a c-clasp. It is pin is not marked, but it tested as 9 karat yellow gold. The pin weighs 5.0 grams.
