Today I am selling a stunning Victorian hand painted portrait brooch. A rectangular, slightly domed, porcelain plaque is painted with a detailed scene of a girl and her dog. The girl is wearing an orange and green striped shawl over a pale blue dress. She has ringlets in her black hair and brown eyes with rosy cheeks. The dog has the size and classic brown and white markings of a King Charles Spaniel. The background is a dark brown which highlights the rich colors in the foreground. It is set in a deep bezel setting which is connected to a hollow tube border with intricately engraved, curved leaves. The frame is not hallmarked but acid tests positive for 14 karat gold. The pin is slightly wobbly but stays securely in the C clasp.
CONDITION: Excellent for its age. A few tiny scratches on the brown background. No chips or cracks to the porcelain plaque. Minor general tarnish to the 14 karat gold frame, mostly on the sides of the bezel setting. The pin may be a replacement but from the same era and in good working order.
CIRCA: Early Victorian era
MEASUREMENTS: the plaque itself is 1 7/16 inches wide and almost 1 1/8 inches tall; the brooch is 1 15/16 inches wide and 1 5/8 inches tall; weighs 15.05 grams
