This is a variation on the Diamonds in Squares pattern with a Bars back pattern. It has been dated to 1862. It was bought over 40 years ago from an antique dealer in Philadelphia specializing, at that time, in quilts and needlepoint. I actually had the name of the lady who made it on the tag but I can't find it. The main body of the quilt is comprised of an overall pattern consisting of 7' by 7" squares inside of which are diamonds , on point, measuring 4.5" by 4.5". Small squares inside the diamonds measure 3.5" by 3.5". The overall size is 74" by 69". The depth of the border is 7".
The quilt is in near perfect condition and is very finely hand sewn and hand quilted. The colours are vibrant. The outside edge of the border looks to have been done on a treadle machine but not sure. Some of the fabrics used are believed to have been men's shirting fabrics.
I had it hanging on the wall in my flat in Philly so on the back I stitched a panel on the back through which you can slide a rod and hang it easily. This has in no way damaged the quilt. In the top right hand corner it looks like there is a stain - it is only a shadow.
It has been stored and is in very good condition.
