This is a fascinating description of a reconnaissance made in 1846-1847 fro Fort Leavenworth to San Diego. The text recounts the topography; Indians, and interactions with wildlife; hardships; flora and fauna. The engravings of the Indians, scenery, etc., are beautifully. executed. Nearly all the plates have some foxing, most of it minor. The text pps. all have foxing and have an overall light brownish tint that in no way detracts from their legibility.
W.H. Emory was, at this time, Brevet Major, Corps of Topographical Engineers. This account was made while with the advanced guard of the "Army of the West".
