Here we have a pair of hand carved, hand painted, figures in costumes from Russia. Actually they were made in the Soviet Union, which is stamped in red on the bottom. I believe the costumes are 19C peasant costumes from Archangel, Russia. The woman is wearing a venek, a diadem, which was unique to this region. This is different from a pochyolok which would have been worn in more areas.
The Soviet state existed from 1922 to 1991. I would place these figures as having been carved circa the 1950s.
They stand eight inches tall, the man being a bit taller. They are made from a light weight wood, both figures weighing a combined nine ounces.
Thank you for looking.
