This is an olla by Jesus Martinez from the village of Mata Ortiz. He was the winner of the galardon, the grand prize, in the 2004 concurso, an annual contest among all the Mata Ortiz potters. Chuy, his nickname, was considered one of the finest potters in the village. His works were included in the 1985 University of New Mexico Art Museum exhibit and the exhibits USA Potters of Mata Ortiz traveling exhibition, 1999-2001. His pots are now hard to find as he and his family are living in New Mexico and he is making very few pieces. Any pot made by him is definitely a collectors' item.
Please look at the pictures carefully to appreciate the very fine work. The last two pictures show two minor chips around the rim. The pot is not new and has seen its share of wear and tear. It was purchased by myself in Arizona over 20 years ago.
It is made from the traditional white clay and measures approximately four inches tall and 4.25 inches at its widest point. I have priced this modestly because of the slight damage to the rim...it is still a most worthy addition to any collection.
Thank you for looking.
