This is a set of Greek chromolithographs from the 1868 Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones and printed by Bernard Quatritch. This work set forth his 37 principles of design. He endeavours to establish four main facts, the first of which says, "That whenever any style of ornament commands universal attention, it will always be found to be in accordance with the laws which regulate the distribution of form in nature."
This is the Bible of ornamentation. All chromolithographs were printed from the original stone plates. The colours are beautiful.
There are eight Greek examples, all of which are described in detail in the accompanying transcript and all of which I shall add to your order. For the serious collector, a person of Grecian birth looking to celebrate the country's rich heritage or the interior designer with a discerning clientele, these are a wonderful acquisition.
The plates are in very fine condition and any faded parts, or lack of focus, are a result of my unfortunate photographic skills.
In the coming weeks I shall be adding the complete sets of 1.Ornament of Savage Tribes, 2.Egyptian, 3.Assyrian and Persian, 4.Pompeian, 5.Roman, 6.Byzantine, 7.Arabian, 8.Turkish, 9.Moresque from the Alhambra, 10.Persian, 11.Renaissance, 12.Elizabethan, 13.Italian, 14.Leaves and Flowers from Nature, 15.Indian, 16.Hindoo, 17.Chinese, 18.Celtic, 19. Mediaeval.
I must add that I did not tear apart the book to sell the prints but believe that the sets should remain intact which is how I am selling them. It came to me completely disbound.
Any overseas delivery must be able to be tracked. As always, thank you for looking.
