Large Venetian canal scene oil painting C. 1920 by French artist Antoine Bouvard(1870-1956). He was Born in Saint-Jean-de-Bournay in Isere in 1870 and studied art and architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After visiting Venice in the early 20th century he was so impressed that he spent much time there to paint the Grand Canal and the Santa Maria Della Salute, and other backwater scenes. And he sold these paintings in Paris under his own name, and under the name Marc Aldine. He is known today as one of master painters of Venice canals. His paintings have been sold world wide, always commanding premium prices. All major art references list Bouvard, and his works are represented in museums around the world.
The painting is in excellent condition having recently been professionally cleaned. It has a small puncture patch repair visible on the reverse photo. Photos show the painting in both indoor and natural lighting. Housed in a stylish wooden frame in excellent condition. Most of his paintings of this scene are much smaller than this one. Signed lower right. Measures 21.5” x 29”unframed and 30” x 37”framed.
