A large oil on canvas by American artist and illustrator John Douglas Woodward((1846-1924) of the Santa Maria Della Salute church in Venice. Very well painted with exceptional detail. Woodward was born in Richmond, Virginia and died in New Rochelle, NY. After the Civil War he studied at the National Academy of Design. Several art journals and publishing companies commissioned his work. In the winter of 1879 and through the 1880’s he painted near South Orange and on Long Island. In 1895 he received a large inheritance and he and his wife traveled throughout Europe. It was during this time period and prior to 1905 that this painting was executed. And Venice and Capri were two of his favorite places in Europe to paint.
The painting is in good condition as found, and in its original gilted very impressive frame. It measures 18”x 26”(unframed) and 30” x 39”(framed).
