A British sterling silver berry spoon by the “Queen of Silversmiths” Hester Bateman(1709-1794). Born in London and married to a maker of gold watch chains, she registered her first makers mark in 1761. However, most of her silver bears a post 1774 date. In 1790 she left her silversmith business to her two sons, Peter and Jonathan. This berry spoon is intricately crafted and date marked 1778; hence, it represents her earlier work. It bears her script initials HB and is not monogrammed. In excellent condition the berry spoon is 7.5” long.
