A fine, colorful, richly detailed, and well documented oil on canvas by Henry Charles Fox (English 1860-1925)). Mainly a painter of small watercolors, this painting, by contrast, is a major work in oil. Fox was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists on Suffolk Street in London, and was a frequent exhibitor there winning many prizes. He painting a wide range of subjects including landscapes, genre, and farm animals. This painting is signed in the lower right and dated 1898, making it one of his earlier known works. The provenance of the painting is particularly interesting because of the labels on the reverse. The Marshall Field's Company had this painting in its early collection and it was retained and sold by Henry Ruth Art Gallery in Kansas City. Fox works have been sold worldwide including ar Christie's and Sotheby's. The painting is in excellent condition having recently been professionally cleaned. It is in its original giltwood frame that is also in excellent condition. The measurements are 24"X 36"(unframed) and 31"X 42.5"(framed).
