A large and beautiful seascape by William Hoffman (California 1924-1995), purchased from a California collection. Hoffman's early life was in Montana on a cattle ranch He was in the Marine Corps and served in the Pacific during WWII. Began painting around 1964 after touring art galleries in San Francisco. He started with seascapes and, after meeting a Los Angeles art dealer who saw his work, he exhibited primarily at his gallery. Hoffman visited his brother who owned a cattle ranch back in Montana in 1974 and from then on he painted western scenes.
This painting is one of his earliest paintings, painted c.1965. He painted this scene many times and in this attempt he succeeded. His brush strokes are soft and detailed. Hoffman was completely self taught. The painting is in excellent condition with no damage or repair. It has been professionally cleaned and the mild craquelature that comes naturally with age has been stabilized. It is in a custom contemporary frame, signed in the lower left, and ready to hang on a wall. It measures 30" x 40"(unframed) and 37.25" x 47"(framed).
