Huge c.1950 oil on canvas by Henri de la Cour, a Belgian artist born in 1890. He was born in Brussels and was living there in 1968. He attended the Fine Arts Academy in Brussels where he excelled at painting architectural scenes. During World War II he was part of the underground. This is a superbly executed painting in excellent condition of a market scene in Brussels, signed in the lower right. It has two small puncture repairs as evidenced by the patches on the reverse. The painting was purchased at the prestigious firm of Veerhoff Galleries in Washington, DC. In 1968 and bears their label on reverse. The frame is believed to be original. The painting is accompanied by a statement by Veerhoff. The painting measures 33" x 45" (framed) and 24" x 36".
