C. 1905 oil on canvas signed "Dean" and attributed to Walter Lofthouse Dean (Gloucester, MA 1854-1912). Dean was born in Lowell, MA and maintained a studio in East Gloucester for almost 30 years where he focused on marine art. This nocturnal painting scene is quite likely from the coastal area around Gloucester. Dean studied in France at. The Acadame Julian under Boulanger and Lefebvre, and was a friend of Corot for a year. He was a member of many art clubs as well as the National Academy of Design. A large painting entitled "Peace" --completed in 1891--hung in the Capital in Washington, D.C. from 1900 to 1928. It is now housed in the Cannon House Office building which is next to the Capital. Dean is listed in all major art references. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. It has been reframed in a fine silver gilted vintage frame. The painting measures 9" x 12"(unframed) and 12.5" x 15.5"(framed).
