An oil on canvas painted c. 1920 by William J. Engelhardt, a California/Illinois artist known for landscapes, particularly desert landscapes. Housed in a heavy, gessoed gilted frame which is likely a later adaptation to the painting. The serene painting and the gilted frame work well together to create a muted glow. Both are in excellent condition. Engelhardt was born in the Chicago area and, except for a time in Los Angeles, lived in the state of Illinois. Only a few paintings by him have turned up; however, he is listed in Hughes "Artists in California, 1786-1940" and other art sources. The painting is signed in the lower left. Measures 22" x 24"(unframed) and 33" x 35"(framed).
