Of elegant design and decoration, this miniature bow front commode is made of heavy paper card with stylised curved panels to each side and top. It is finished with a faux veneer of lithographed paper portraying the boulle decoration of foliate scrolls and ornamentation entwined in gilt to a ‘tortoiseshell’ base - edged too, in gilded ‘ebony’ border decoration.
A full width single drawer is fitted to the base, which slides easily open, with brass ring pull to the centre (black silk and gold thread tassel attached), elaborate metal feet supporting.
May originally have been a form of bonbon box and would be more than suitable for display amongst any French doll’s favoured possessions. The top of the box shows slight fading and overall wear commensurate with age (see photos).
Measures approximately 4” high, 9 ½” wide, 5 ¾” deep.
