Typical heads of mankind engraved print 1900 - 12" x 8. 12"
Wonderful engraved print entitled ' Typical heads illustrating race-stocks of mankind' Published by Funk & Wagnall in the subscribers edition of their standard dictionary of the English language in 1900. Sheet size 12" x 8. 1/2" approximately with explanatory text to the reverse on each racial group.
Very much indicative of the state of anthropological thinking of the time it classifies the different races into Eurafrican (Caucasian), Austafrican (Negroid), Asian, Insular and Litoral (Interoceanic) and American, further breaking each down into branches, stock and groups (including extinct races). There is a second type of classification 'Based on the character of the hair as prepared by the Smithsonian Institution'. This starts with the basic groups of 'smooth' and 'woolly' then sub-divides into 'tufts', 'fleecy', 'straight' and 'curly' assigning different races to each group. Fascinating stuff and would provide a wonderful talking point.
