A very nice large size Mauchline ware sycamore wood box with a scarce combination of transfer ware and ferns dated to the late nineteenth century.
The print depicts Sir Walter Scotts monument in Edinburgh and is bordered by two sprigs of ferns. The front has the legend "grown on the lands of Abbotsford". The interior carries the label for John Clark junior & Co. of Mile End, Glasgow and references Thomas Russell, sole agent for the United States.
A very collectable box combining the late Victorian craze for ferns with one of the most popular authors of the time.

Condition: very good, some minor nicks to the varnish by the right hand spray and a fine craquelure to the top mentioned for accuracy.
