A Japanese antique Kutani porcelain censer or incense burner dating to the late Meiji period at the turn of the century, of the era 1868-1912. It is a handmade piece heavily decorated in many finely painted in many lovely underglaze colors with over glaze enamel. The design is that of an expert with a combination of traditional styles and borders. Very pretty oval shaped cut outs are outlined in flowers for the censer use. The handles are done in a Chinese style shape and colors. It has maintained its beauty and is in very good condition with no cracks or chips. It is hand signed on the bottom with an old fuku mark, which is often used on Kutani. The seller did identify as such and they had owned since mid century. The style does have a Chinese flair to it although it is Japanese. We recently saw a piece made just like this probably newer signed which said '峯久 Minehisa marked', but do not know if it is the same, I would assume it is. A Very fine censer, really nice piece.

SIZE: Approximately 5.5" in height and 4-3/4" in diameter, or Height in Cm 13.97 with 10.16 in diameter.

Kutani-yaki 九谷焼

Kutani ware is Japanese porcelain made in Kaga province and now in Ishikawa prefecture. The name Old Kutani refers to porcelain decorated with heavily applied overglaze enamels and produced in the Kaga mountain village of Kutani. The Kutani family have run as a family business since the turn of the century, with many well-known potters in the family. There is so much more information available on the internet about Kutani because it is so popular, I will leave one to their own browsing choices for Kutani information. See our Facebook page for some great videos of ancient Kutani items at the Kutani Museum by a well- known Kutani expert. There is also a great page regarding Kutani ware by the same gentleman, called The Kutani Ceramic website.
