This Japanese Kyoto Ware Pottery Bowl with Engraved Momiji or Maple Leaf was made at the famous Kamine-gama or kiln and workshop in Kyoto. Momiji is the name for the maple leaf and therefore design. The perfect color glorious glazed on the bowl is "Kaki" (reddish brown). Maple leaf patterns are randomly carved around the top the double lip of the bowl. This particular bowl was made as wedding gift according to the seller in Japan and was kept stored and unused. It is about 20 years old. It comes with the tomobako or original wooden box signed and stamped by the potter, and is also signed on the bottom of the bowl. It is in excellent condition as can be seen in the pictures, no chips or cracks. It is a large size bowl, with a good size lip; an absolutely beautiful piece with nice thick glaze.
In November, when the autumn foliage is at its peak in Japan, numerous momiji festivals are held throughout the country. One of the most famous momiji festivals is held at Kyoto's Arashiyama. This bowl is also made in celebration of that time of year, and I love that so much about Japan and the way of celebrating everything about life. One can read more about the Momiji festivals at the "Japan" main website (.org).
