This rare and unique Japanese highly decorated porcelain mizusashi or cold water container is an unusual piece. The seller did not know much about it, it may be Kyoto ware or an unusual artist experiment with Fukagawa, see similar colors in our other Fukagawa pieces. The porcelain itself is very nice. The drawing and hand painting technique is very well done and detailed, the colors vibrant. It is decorated with a great purple dragon holding a pearl, many many clouds and some flowers are also enameled. All of the decoration are outlined in black; unusual but an old traditional Japanese style motif. The finial is white with gold gilt. It is signed inside the lip of the mizusashi. First, there is a small picture of Mt. Fuji that looks almost exact to that of the Fukagawa mark. There is also other writing. One could be a potter signature and the other a date or inventory number or, the potter number in a family succession of potter names. It is a very pretty piece. Purple is most often not a color used for items for sale in Japan, according to one of my dealers from Japan. I do not know the age, but maybe early Showa- 1920's-1950s. . It was a purchase from a US collector in PA, where I find many old authentic Japanese items exist. There are no cracks. I do not see any crazing or chips. There is some age wear around the rim and discoloring. But, I will always re check before pack and mailing. Sept 4, Update. I have seen two pieces of Kutani tonight from Japan dating to turn of the 19th c.-1920's similar to this piece in color and design.
