A Chinese Old Bamboo Carving of a 守兴 Shǒu xìng Figure with Deer. From our collection of an estate auction, it is at least of vintage age of early to mid 20th century. Shǒu xìng in Chinese Mythology is the God of Longevity. A gourd and animal at the top of his staff holding a gourd on his head. A deer is curled up at the bottom of his robe. It is a nicely carved piece and just starting to develop patina or color aging to the bamboo. It has deeply carved details with natural wood grain showing, very beautiful and the pictures do not do it justice. The appropriate wear can be seen in the bamboo for its age. It has no damage.
SIZE: Height 5" or 12.7 cm
The Story of 守兴 Shǒu xìng
This is an excerpt shared from the site called "God Checker", an encyclopedia of Mythology and quite interesting , and entertaining. Please let me know if any of this story needs to be revised or corrected in any way. As the writer here calls him, he is "The superstar of longevity and old age" and as follows: The most venerable member of the San-xing happiness squad, his name means ‘Star Of Long Life’. He is old and bald, and always carries a Golden Peach of Immortality from Xi-Wangmu's Holy Peach Garden. These are found only in Heaven and ripen once every three thousand years.
Shou-xing was a young and sickly lad named Zhao-Yen, who was destined to die when he reached 19. Told by a fortune-teller to enter a certain field armed with a packed lunch, he found two men playing checkers. Having been warned to keep his mouth shut, he silently offered them spring rolls and wine, which were gratefully accepted. So gratefully, in fact, that the men, revealing themselves to be the Gods of Birth and Death, offered him longevity. First they took his allotted lifespan of 19 years and reversed it, giving 91 years. Then they munched another spring roll, had another sip of wine, and decided he deserved immortality.
