This Japanese Tsuchi-Ningyo 土人形 or folk art clay doll is the artist rendition of a man in his kimono playing the traditional Japanese drum. These wonderful folk art pieces are deep in Japanese tradition. The phrase tsuchi-ningyō simply points to the fact that the dolls are made of clay. Japan has a long tradition of clay figurines starting with the archaic dogū and haniwa, to those made in Fushimi, Hanamaki, Inuyama, Koga, Sagara, Tsutsumi, and at present, the brightly colored Hakata figures. It is carefully handmade with clay, and cold painted by hand. This man represents a drummer holding a traditional Japanese drum. He kimono is painted in blue, red and yellow. These dolls are very delicate, this one has held together very well. They show dirt easily, but can be damp cleaned just as easily. This doll is of average ornamental doll size. It is about 50 to 60 years old. It has some wearing to the paint and a small minor damage on the bottom back. On the Daruma Doll Museum blogspot the link to which is previously shared in our 'Favorite Links' on our homepage, one kind find more detail about each type of tsuchi-ningyo from each region.

This folk art comes to us from a man who I have become friends with named Hiroshi, who lives in a small town called Miyagi, to which he was displaced along with many others after he and his wife lost their home in the tsunami . All of the profits for these folk art dolls go to the Miyagi school funds. As with all people around the world who have lost their life possessions and homes in natural disasters, the people of Japan suffered one of the worst disasters on record, and continue to rebuild and need support- even today. Almost one million buildings were flattened and damaged beyond repair; or otherwise damaged, which including homes.
