A Japanese vintage circular lacquerware shikki tray is decorated with an unusual abstract flower. Shikki 漆器 is the Japanese word for lacquerware,
According to the dealer in Japan, 'This has the very good lacquer work. It is a very good pattern of a flower. This is the very good lacquer ware seriously made by the specialist as a kashiki. It is the general term for bowl or plate for use in the tea ceremony. Tools for the tea ceremony
is an upscale than a typical dishware.
We do not know the flower pattern name nor what it says on the front of the box but would have to agree with his assessment. The cone shape of the plate alone sitting on top of beveled bottom rims is fine. The combination of two colors of lacquered brown and black background is great. The flowers of the leafy plant look like kidney beans. The flowers bud in the center looks like a bee or other insect landed there to soak up the nectar.
The dish is in near- excellent condition with no cracks, there is one small area on the upper rim with scratches, and some on the lower rim, the rest is glare.
SIZE: Diameter 10.1 in or 25.5 cm, Height 1.1 in or 2.9 cm. Tray weight 6.7 oz. or 190 grams, box 14.11 oz or 400 grams.
The box is signed on the front with most likely the item description in the center and the artist stamp and signature in the bottom left.' The box is in good condition with the exception of one warped side on the lid but it has the nice quality ribbon for tying. This can usually easily be corrected by holding the lid to the bottom with a clamp for a few days, and carefully clamping as it is delicate!
