This Japanese vintage Shikki 漆器 or Lacquerware Koma or Top Decoration. It is a lacquerware kogo or incense case made in the motif of a koma or spinning top- as in the toy-decoration. It is a very beautiful style of lacquerware. It is also used as a style on tea jars and other round boxes. A kogo is used for holding incense and historically most often for the tea ceremony, at the temple, and for the small worship area in the home. The kogo are also wonderful items of character to decorate with, in addition to placing small items in around the house. We check all those that come in- since Sharon has a fondness for kogo as a decoration, and make sure they do not have a smell to them. These are hand made and hand lacquered pieces. It is decorated in a lovely combination of colors of orange, tan, green and black. It is very smooth and feels nice in the hand.
It is in excellent condition, no cracks or chips. Please see the pictures and ask any questions. We are non-house smokers and do not smoke around our wares and our very careful with them to have clean hands and in the packing. We are careful to check incoming items for any unusual smells. Again please let us know if you have any questions. This is a purchase from a well- known and honest, quality antique dealer in Japan.
