This Asian set of three vintage statues represent a Chinese warrior and two beautiful women. The only other thing that crossed my mind is they may represent a set of performers or animal trainers, a trio at the circus. Or, Chinese dancers or entertainers. They are made from some type of heavy resin with some very intricate details and on each piece- they are not plastic or some other type of inexpensive material nor are they animal material. The man is holding a shield and sword, standing on a foo dog. The beautiful women have dark wood dragons at their sides with five claws each, indicative of Chinese art. The details of their clothing are great down to the flower kanzashi in the bijin or beautiful women's hair, and the pendant and swinging ball on the man, The wood is very nice heavy quality, thickly carved black wood and I think it is either agarwood or ebony ironwood, it is heavy. The statues themselves appear to be stained, but also appear to have their own type of 'patina'. There are no mold lines in the statues except for on both sides of the foo dog, if that is what they are, but then I have to wonder why only that part.
The pictures do not do this lovely set justice. They have been well cared for in our curio and in mint condition. We are not sure how these are made but feel certain of artist involvement and that it was a complicated process. They are medium heavy sculptures. They are supposed to be signed at the bottom of each piece according to one of our other 'daughters', but I have cannot nor do not recall seeing it just that the letters were mm tall, nor have we captured with our cameras. I have had them put away for a while hoping to get better pictures, and I forgot about them.
I purchased them from the daughter of the original owners in the U.S. who said her parents brought them back from Japan in the 1950's, so we originally thought they were Japanese but now have our doubts, unless they were made in Japan in the motif of characters from China or possibly somewhere else.. We think they date to the 1920-1940's, but they could be older. We would love to hear from anyone who might have an idea about anything to do with these.
