This Japanese antique patinated bronze ornament of a crab is a 19th-century piece dating to the Meiji period of 1868-1912. It was made by a metalsmith, using the old tools and heated, hammered, and ‘carved’ or cut out. It has two tone patina’s I have seen on these crabs due to the design on the shell of its back, which is either indicative of mixed metals or sometimes they lacquer the metal with different colors. Unfortunately, I did not capture this well with my camera in overexposing lost the contrast, so I added one of my seller's pictures to show this. A lovely sea life ornament of a crab which was probably originally used as a noshi-osae, which was a high-class way in the old days of attaching cards to gifts. We were really lucky to have acquired three crabs and this is the largest. We love these pieces they are like decorative netsuke. This piece is in excellent condition with no missing parts and has been well cared for. There may be some scrapes or surface wear but not obvious to the naked eye. We will be posting the other two and willing to discount into a reasonable group price if someone wishes to purchase the entire three! This is the smallest of the three crabs.

Caring for Your Metal Objects
From Victoria and Albert Museum Britain
There is a good article called 'Caring for your Metal Objects' on the website of Victoria and Albert Museum in Britain. But, it goes into much more than just identifying, and in good detail. I do not really want to give any cleaning advice and we do not want you to lose the lovely patina, this piece does not need any work anyway. We would recommend just dusting off with a clean brush like a paint brush or makeup brush but that has never been used before, or some type of soft cloth with nothing on it. We have added the link to the article in our 'Favorites' links on our homepage.
