This Japanese vintage wood ornament of a Heron is the most frequent companion of the Water Buffalo. Rhis is a hand carrved piece by the wood craftsman. All of it's body, the wings and rest except the beak is stained showing the beautiful wood grain in the natural color of the Water buffalo heron in the true chestnut color of this heron with a cream colored beak. Out of over 65 species of heron in the world, the 'Gorsachius goisagi' or 'Temminck', is also known as the Japanese Night Heron and only found in this area of Asia. It can be found pictured in books and other images flying above the herd of water buffalo, riding on their backs as a passenger, sitting on their faces, running along side them around on the ground. Sparing the grandest eagle, the great character and appearance of the heron and crane make them my favorite birds of Japanese art. This is a simple and nicely done artist carving and work. Ir is in very good condition with no cracks or chips, some minor surface wear. This is a nice size handsome heron and would make a great cabinet piece in a living room or office.

well after all this research from the info given to me from the seller in Japan, someone is telling me this is a cockatoo not a hernon, so further research is required to replace the current info. Still, a great piece especially the cockatoo or bird lover!

Japanese Night Heron, Gorsachius goisagi - Temminck
Nycticorax goisagi Temminck, 1835. Pl. Col. Livr. 98, pl. 582: Japan.
DESCRIPTION The Japanese Night Heron is a small, small billed chestnut and buff heron.
ADULT: The Japanese Night Heron has a chestnut cap with a short chestnut crest. The bill is relatively short and stout for a heron. The upper bill is dark brown; the lower bill is yellow. The irises are yellow and the lores are green yellow, forming a notable patch in front of the eye. The sides of the neck are buff brown. The upper parts are pale chestnut. The darker wings have blackish primaries with prominent broad tawny tips, giving the appearance of a black wing bar on an otherwise tawny wing. A pale patch on the forewing can be seen in good light. The under sides are brown with darker streaking and the flanks are slightly mottled. The legs are black green. In breeding, lores turn blue, and the bill turns green black. VARIATION: The sexes are alike.
