This Japanese vintage Kutani-yaki porcelain sake or tokkuri bottle dates to the mid-20th century. It is a beautiful handmade porcelain piece. It is hand painted with traditional Kutani red and black borders on the top and bottom with light gold lines and moriage, a lovely colorful wild flower bouquet and a black and gold butterfly. These are painted with light overglaze enamels and outlined in black lines and white spotted moriage decor. It has a nice kodai or foot all the way around the bottom with stylized cut-out three part design. This is the most common style for a Kutani sake bottle, and resembles the one called 'Mentori" on Robert Yellins discussion about sake bottle on his eyakimono site. It is underglaze signed on the bottom in akae or red with the traditional and generic mid-century Kutani kamajirushi which helps date it. This tokkuri is in excellent conditio with no cracks or chips and if not for a sake bottle would make a lovely vase or collector's item. It is a lovely Kutani tokkuri, please forgive my over exposed pictures.

Kutani ware 九谷焼
Kutani ware is Japanese porcelain made in Kaga province and now in Ishikawa prefecture. The name Old Kutani refers to porcelain decorated with heavily applied overglaze enamels and produced in the Kaga mountain village of Kutani. The Kutani family have run as a family business since the turn of the century, with many well-known potters in the family. There is so much more information available on the internet about Kutani because it is so popular, I will leave one to their own browsing choices for Kutani information. See our Facebook page for some great videos of ancient Kutani items at the Kutani Museum by a well- known Kutani expert. There is also a great page regarding Kutani ware by the same gentleman Georges Bouvier, called The Kutani Ceramic website.
