This Japanese vintage mixed metal copper crumb catcher is a unique find, a practical piece, an artistic tool. All homes should have one, while we know modern ones exist, they are not made and designed like this one which also offers a perfect fit to the hands and turns out is ergonomic as well! We date this to the early 20th, between the 1920s and 1950s, several were seen made during occupied Japan. We found others in different styles dated to this same time period including the occupied Japan era. I like that this one is smaller than most, a good fit for my hands. It is a non-magnet attractor and has developed a copper color patina since we have had it and kept in unused condition, ao moat likely a mixed metal of copper and bronze. It is light like aluminum perhaps but not as light as tin. The borders are ornately decorated with a three claw dragon with a fierce face on both pieces and very decorative in low relief with a textured finish overall on the front, and a smooth finish to the back. They are in good overall condition and expected age wear with no cracks breaks or chips. My first picture inadvertently chopped of the top, it is rounded all the way around. 'Made in Japan' is inscribed on the bottom of the tray portion. I believe the mark translates as 'uzu-fuku' written 渦福, which is a calligraphic version of the fuku mark, using a spiral as a part of the design. A kanji or Chinese character, fuku means happiness. An interesting mark to have chosen to put on this little dust pan, we will all be happy when the tea leaves and cat hairs are cleaned up.
