This Japanese metal and wood vintage set of medical tools are for an unknown specialty or procedure, but I believe they look like dental tools. Confirmed for me by a physician, dental tools! The seller and I agree they probably date to the early 20th century. The handles are wood, the box is wood, the metal is unknown probably stainless for quality. The tools are engraved with someone's name, we do not know if it was the name of the person that developed the tool and/ or procedure. or given as a gift and engraved, or made them. We did find several Japanese medical Journal articles written by a person with the same last name of "Minegazu" which is the name on the tools. The metal plate on the front of the box also has what we believe is a physicians name, ""Doi Masanobu". Another part of the plate has the name of a facility ""Tokyo Tsubomikai", which is a medical and dental teaching facility in Tokyo, and there is a also a medical society with the same name, I believe it is an area in Tokyo. Lastly, interpreted as either Kamino or Kanno Minekazu- and we think probably either the name of the person the set belonged to, the designer, or both. The first time we looked it pulled up several links to Gastroenterology information in the same Tokyo facility, which would make sense since the mouth is considered part of the GI system. But, now I cannot find those links. Regardless, this is a quality old set as a collectors item, both the box and tools. The wood looks like it is most likely rosewood.. It is lined. All the parts including those that hold the tools down, the metal hinges and the front latch are tight and work. An interesting collector's item for a physician or other collector. It is also possible it is a commemorative or anniversary piece. Because I (Sharon) has worked in healthcare for 30 years it just struck me as interesting. I continue to research and see if I can find more, if you have an idea let us know! Would love to find more old medical tool sets.
