To me, this vintage gold tone figural rhinestone lapel pin looks most like the fruit fly, which has slightly translucent wings and a red back- and after comparing images of several types. Figurals pins and brooches are some of my favorite pins. This costume mid century piece has a lovely blood- red stone on its back and rhinestone wings. It even has an expression on its face. The goldtone metal is heavy, It is hallmarked AFJ, which was the mark for three jewelry companies, one fine jewelry and two fashion/ costume jewelry companies, I see most people choosing American Fashion Jewels for the maker with this information. I could be wrong, but I think in this case AFJ was/ is the You Sung Costume Jewelry, Inc.in New York, who used the same hallmark. Gramercy Jewelry Company is the jewelry supplier under the company You Sung Costume Jewelry, Inc. They use a lot of rhinestones even still, the company is stull in business and his heavily patented jewelry is imported around the world. See Gramercy site for more information. Outside of the norm for what we had planned in jewelry for the store (except probably insect and figural pins), this and some other vintage and antique rhinestone pieces we are adding to our collection are pieces inherited from people in my family - my aunt, great aunt, and grandmother to mention a few. We will put these in their own special category, "Family Collection". Of course, I will be keeping my very special pieces. This is a lovely figural gold and rhinestone fashion lapel pin in excellent unblemished condition. It has a good strong gold pin for the back. I supposed it could also be used as a tie tack.
