This is a fine Chinese antique lacquered wood Gosu box. 古薮 Gǔ sǒu is the general term for a case with a lid, I believe the origin of the word Gǔ sǒu is Chinese.. A Gǔ sǒu is a little bigger than a kogo. It can be used for an accessories or jewelry According to the dealer quote- 'regardless of old or new, this is a serious Chinese piece'. They were not sure of the age. in our opinion late 19th to early 20th century.
It is a fine decorated and lacquered wood box. The red hue, colors and background are unusual. It was handmade by an artisan; then hand decorated by hand drawing and painting green and gold butterflies called Húdié or 蝴蝶 and flowers called Huāhu 花卉. The art and colors are fine, the lacquer thick. The inside is black lacquered similar to Japanese rice bowls. It is truly very unique and unusual. There is a similar piece that looks almost exactly like this just older called 'Lacquerware in Asia, Today and Yesterday' by Monika Kopplin published in 2002.
It does have just some minor wear between the two pieces where they meet, which is the most common area to wear first But, there are no cracks or chips. The insides and bottom are also in very good condition.
SIZE: Diameter 3.8" or 9.65 cms, Height 2.4" or 6.09 cms
