This is a vintage Arita Mikawachi Hirado 平戸 white porcelain censer, made by the kiln of Moemon Nakazato about 30 years ago. Hirado porcelains are characterized by their pure white body and clear glaze, often with fine painting in underglaze blue. Some pieces are embellished with brown glaze. Others, more rarely, are covered with a fine celadon glaze. While Japanese scholars often technically refer to this material as Mikawachi ware, the popular term in both Japan and the West is Hirado ware. A censer is an incense burner, but also make wonderful decorative or collector items- especially these pieces. They make very nice decorative items around the house or as a small box for other small items. By a very skilled potter's hands or his apprentice, using tools he clay is carved before it is fired. Hirado is till made the old fashioned way, It stiil have openings for the incense to escape, flowers which appear to be chrysanthemums around the top, sitting on modern style tripod legs with two square handles, a foo dog is molded on the top. It is an excellent piece of work. The signature of the potter (hard to see) is on the bottom with the mark of the third kiln (the three dots). There is a repair to one of the square handles but barely noticeable, or for those to whom it does not matter and at these great price it is a wonderful piece to own. We believe this is the work of the 15th Moemon Nakazato, while I am searching for more information about him, the history of the 14th is below, as he is known for his revival of Hirado ware.

The 15th Moemon Nakazato and the Nakazato Shigerumigiwemon kiln

The Nakazato Shigerumigiwemon kiln was the third original Hirado kiln as can be seen represented by the three dots in the artist signature on their pieces. Nakazato Shigeru the has been making 平戸焼き Hirado-yaki at the Nakazato Shigerumigiwemon kiln for Fifteen generations of famous Hirado potters have worked at the most famous Nakazato Shigerumigiwemon. Their white porcelain are the highest quality works today made as grand censers and okimono decorated in elaborate dragons and chrysanthemums and other motif in relief, often said of their pieces as three-dimensional relief. They are among the highly quality and the most finely decorated Hirado of the 20th century. Some of our previous and current collection of Hirado were made by the Great 14th Moemon Nakazato 萌え男中里 born in 1913 and deceased 1972, his given name Shigeru Nakazato 中里茂, and some are collection are made by the 15th Moemon Nakazato.

Many other Hirado kilns can be found in Mikawachi, Nagaski and other outlying areas. Of interest many of the Masters of these kilns are either direct descendants of took the name of one of the first founders of Hirado, the very first Moemon Nakazato from 400 years ago, the older history which we are not sharing here. These other artists and kilns include: Master Potter Toshitala Satomi at the Hiradokakushou Kiln in Nagasaki, the Hirado KoSachidan Migyemonkama or Kiln , Hirado ware at the Kotobanku - Kotobank kiln, Artists Nakazato Tsukido and Tsutomu Sakusueten of the Hirado Matsuyama kiln, Master Tsukido Tsutomu of the Hirado Shouzan kiln, another Nakazato Moemon AND Hirado Kohsyo Danemon Kiln and the Nakazato Moemon at the Hirado Kohsyo Danemon Kiln, the family head Yashiro Nakazato at the Hirado KoSachidan Migiwemon kiln, and more. The difference in these kilns as compared to the of the the Moemon Nakazato at Nakazato Shigerumigiwemon kiln is the type of Hirado they produce, for the most part the others are involved in different styles of tea ceremony and table ware with some decorative ware as compared to the magnificent 4-foot-tall and larger censers. Today, the craft is headed by 14 government recognized Master Craftsmen among the 240 employed by the 35 firms maintaining a craft of class.

Fifteenth generation Nakazato Moemon Shigerumigiwemon

Teruyuki Tsujita now Moemon the 15th was born in in 1943 Saga Prefecture Arita born. In 2008 his contribution of many years to the ceramic art world is recognized, when he won the ‘Saga of Arts and Culture Award’.

The carving skills of Nakazato Shigerumigiwemon 15th and his work with white porcelain has attracted reviews as ‘no person is comparable to the world’. Yes, carving does occur on porcelain with special tools before it is fired in the kiln. This came about the same time as the fears of whether the Hirado traditions were becoming extinct and what its place was in contemporary works.
