This is a okimono/ statue of the Japanese Hotei written as 布袋 , and a purchase directly from a nice lady in Japan. It is approximately 20 or more years old. Hotei is a well- known symbol of happiness. I am not sure what prompted me to by these two okimono, they are not like the others we usually collect but we just thought this guy has great character. Just like the other bamboo Chinese Hotei we have, he makes me smile. The material looks somewhat similar to Bakelite, but is a more durable type material. The character and artwork are well done, The handmade wooden stand is a lightweight wood and painted dark brown. The other one is sold.

Please see our other okimono and ornament in the store, by different makers, ages, sizes, motif and color. Many are found under Kutani, and others under both Fine Arts and Vintage Collectible sculpture, and sometimes it is just as easy to use the search bar at the top center of the pagewhich will search only in our store, but the one of the right will pull from all of Ruby Lane.

Hotei

Budai is called "Hotei" in Japan. Budai, pronounced Hotei in Japanese, is a Chinese folkloric deity. His name means "Cloth Sack," and comes from the bag that he carries. He is almost always shown smiling or laughing, hence his nickname in Chinese, Budai or Pu-Tai (Chinese: 布袋; pinyin: Bùdài), or Hotei in Japanese; is a Chinese folkloric deity. He is almost always shown smiling or laughing, hence his nickname in Chinese, the Laughing Budai (笑佛).

In this humble little okimono or statue, he is shown jovial and laughing, laying on a futon or other similar piece of furniture In the second similar statue I purchased with it, he is shown with children climbing all over him. He is shown as usual with his big happy belly and big ears.
