This is a lovely hand carved vintage Chinese bamboo statue of a Budai. The Budai 布袋 in China is also known as the Hotei 布袋 in Japan, a well known symbol of happiness. Just looking at this statue will put a smile on your face. He is a Chinese folkloric deity. His name means Cloth Sack, and comes from the bag that he is conventionally depicted as carrying. In this picture he is showing jovial and laughing leaning up against his cloth sack on the floor. He is shown as usual with his big happy belly and big ears, holding a plate with a fruit. He is nicely carved by hand, and appears to have been stained red at some point- I believe later in life. It is well done and a nice color red. Under the red you can see the patterns of the bamboo which tends to show more as it ages and one can still see the aging patina. This Budai statue is well made and a nice bamboo piece, solid and heavy weighing in and just over a pound. It is in excellent condition. I do not know the age, but based on experience in seeing how bamboo ages, I believe it has some years on it and while not antique may be close to, it as at least mid century and has been repainted or lacquered we think. This was a purchase from one of my antique dealers in Japan, they did not know the age. It is a good and large size old Chinese statue:
SIZE: Width 7.1" or 18.03 cms, Length 4.7" or 11.93 cms, Height 5.1" or 12.95 cms
