Offered here, is a perfect reflection of the beautiful colours of a Canadian autumn.
This sash, or souvenir oval brooch, is wreathed with maple leaves displaying green, rust, yellow and golden hues. A champlevé enamelling technique was used for the leaves, against a white guilloche enamelled background. There is a "C" clasp and very straight and sturdy pinstem. This pin measures app. 2.75 x 2 inches, and it weighs 23.8 grams. This antique brooch is in excellent condition, with no damage or loss to the enamel. All vitreous enamelling requires considerable mastery to obtain a pleasing result, and this brooch displays great skill.
This brooch is marked RD (very faint) 1904 STERLING, which is possibly the year that the design pattern was registered. For the history of early Canadian sterling and enamel patriotic souvenir pins, please see the article that I wrote, which is on the Costume Jewelry Collectors International (cjci) website.
