This is a truly rare find by one of France's most celebrated contemporary designers, Hervé Van der Straeten.
Most of Van der Straeten's current jewellery is made from hammered and cut metal, usually bronze, plated in 24 carat gold, or silver. But some of the jewellery that Hervé first started creating in 1985 while still a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, combined semi precious stones with metal. Herrvé created hand-wrought jewellery for French designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, and Jean Paul Gaultier, and his pieces were soon sold internationally.
Offered here is an example of an early Hervé Van der Straeten creation. This necklace consists of 8 hand-cut huge 1.5 x .67 inch rose quartz beads drilled through and wired to deep cranberry glass (possibly garnets) spacers. Between these spacers is a larger bead, all securely linked by brass wires. From this necklace is suspended a 2.37 x 2.12 inch metal heart that has two spirals cut into the plated metal. Three more of the hand-cut rose quartz beads are attached to the heart (for a total of 11 of these uniquely cut natural stones.) These pendants are capped with purple poured glass flowers and the small cranberry glass beads. A hand-made toggle clasp securely fastens this weighty necklace. The necklace measures app. 22 inches long, and the heart and pendants drop 4.25 inches. This accessory is signed VAN DER STRAETEN on a plaque. This necklace is in very good vintage condition, with a small chip in the base of the central pendant and wear to the plating of the metal heart (especially on the front - like a patina) and the clasp, which adds to the antique look of the piece.
Hervé's jewellery always had a sculptural look, and he eventually started designing mirrors, lighting and furniture. In 1998, he opened his own gallery "to be able to show the jewelry, the new furniture and the other objects all at once. I wanted to establish the interconnection between all of them." (quoted in FASHION & STYLE by Nazanin Lankarani, May 2, 2008) Van der Straeten has also designed makeup cases, perfume bottles and glassware for some of France's most respected fashion houses and manufacturers, including Fendi, Dior, Guerlain and Cristallerie de Saint-Louis. According to his website, the Hervé Van der Straeten workshops have earned a number of awards. In 2007, they were named a "Living Heritage Business" (“Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant”) by France's Ministry of Culture, and in 2008, Hervé Van der Straeten himself was named Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In September 2012, the company became a member of the Comité Colbert, an association set up to promote the concept of luxury goods.
This is an exceptional item of jewellery from a leading French designer.
