$325
American and British Antiques, Jewelry and Vintage Objects of Fascinating and Unique Appeal
Welcome to my shop. Time to treat yourself. I'm adding my latest treasure finds. Layaway available. Have A Brilliant Day!
Antique Victorian steel cut drop earrings with shepherd hooks. unsigned, circa 1840-1870. The steel studs on the perimeter of these pendants are close riveted and I can count at least 12-12 facets on each. They resemble rose cut gems to me. Towards the center of each pendant is what I see is stems of a cluster of cherries, which is a golden color(stems). Please see my photos for a more visual description.
Cut steel jewelry goes as far back to the Elizabethan period in England. Demand grew into the 1700's when King Louis XV requested citizens to donate their precious gems and jewelry to fund the military during the "Seven Years War". There was an overwhelming demand and manufacture increased in Birmingham and Woodstock England.
This was not an easy product to manufacture as studs had to be hand faceted, polished and riveted in place on to a base. The more facets, the more sparkle. I have counted up to 12 facets to each of the small studs on these ear pendants. The technique used to create the facets is called "chip carving", which was used in ancient times on bone and wood. The studs were small and densely compacted in pave designs, then riveted to a supporting metal base. This type of jewelry remained popular until the late 19th Century when the facets had been reduced to around five and the quality and interest declined.
Excellent condition for wear and use, some age dust between studs(visible under magnification)
Gift Box included
