Whitby Jet comprised the favorite Victorian mourning jewelry. In this instance, one finds the practical hat pin twinned with riveted jet, in excellent antique condition. In a diamond configuration, it is fashioned of double, back to back pieces. This head is 1 and 1/2 inches wide and 1 and 3/4 inches long. The diamond shape is outlined in small, faceted, round beading. The interior of the shape features quadruple triangular pieces, set at the cardinal points. These are also faceted. Moving inward to the center, one finds a four row square. Each row has four pyramid points, again faceted. The steel pin shank is 5 inches long. There is not a metal finding, but rather the shank is simply inserted between the diamond shaped pieces. All the parts were riveted in that they were attached to metal frames individually. This gives a lace like look, with light peeking through the minute apertures. While jet hat pins are not that unusual, those in this format are. This piece was purchased in England, the only source of genuine Whitby Jet. This is an exquisite example of the art of carved gleaming, black jet. The surfaces of the facets reflect light in a subtle, but substantial manner.
Take this one home with confidence that it is authentic and in excellent antique condition. It emanates from a decades long collection and will be a great addition to a new one.
This hat pin is from Charlotte's personal collection, which was developed over three decades. She has belonged to the American Hat Pin Society for decades, to continue to learn and associate with fellow collectors. It is time for some of these treasures to move on to new houses!
