This piece is set apart from many of its type. It is not only a cameo style brooch, but converts to a pendant, via a small movable ring, at the top. The piece is of black glass, clearly imitating Victorian jet. The bust applied to the top of the glass is a male, and is dressed as a Roman centurion. The man in the portrait is looking left (when viewed head on) which is different than most pins of this kind. The bust is large enough to clearly see he is in Roman style uniform, with a crested helmet on top of his hair, which is representative of a centurion.
The features of the man's face, the locks of his hair, and especially his eyes, are much more finely detailed than one would normally see. There is an inner rim of gold tone/brass tone metal which surrounds the base of the glass cameo. The outer frame is done in a braided design, with a matte finish.
The brooch is 2in by 2in. The back of the frame is open and it has a straight pin, ending in a safety clasp. There is patina on the metal on the back of the frame which appropriate for the time that has passed since it was made. The loop converting it to a pendant appears to have been a later addition, rather than an original original feature.
This is a 1930's to 1940's piece and is clearly patterned after a Victorian mourning brooch. Other than noted above, it is in excellent vintage condition.
