Want a chunk of history that spans from the mid 18th century to the 1920's of the 20th century ? That is what you get when to choose this fabulous piece! This is a miser's purse, with this particular example being from the mid Victorian period, about the 1870's.

A miser's purse has a narrow, tubular shape, almost like a stocking, with a slit in the middles. On either side of the slit are rings, called sliders. In this instance, the sliders are silver tone metal, meant to compliment the cut steel beading decoration on the purse. The steel cut beading is interwoven with the burgundy hued knitted portion of the purse.

Coins are inserted via the slit and then a slider is pushed down over the slit, with the money snugly ensconced in either side. When the purse is laid flat, it measures 15" long x 2-3/4" wide. These beauties were carried by both women and men, and were convenient to carry over a belt. This example is in excellent antique condition. You can even watch a video on You Tube, demonstrating how to use a miser's purse!

This purse is a book piece and listed in "From Antique Purses", by Richard Holiner, revised 2nd edition, page 57, top left.
