When walking down the street, a Victorian lady would have a bounce in her step that transmitted to her "nodder" hat pin! Hat pins of this type were very popular, as they lent a jaunty quality to the day. This particular one has a pin shank of 6 and 1/8 in. The shank is steel, which has darkened with age.
The fun head, constituting the "nodder" is styled as a six petaled flower. It is 3/4 in diameter, and is of course attached on a spring, which is what gives it its movement. The center of the flower has a ruby red chaton. The petals and the chaton are supported by an open work girdle, which loop, and have very small raised dots. The metal of hat pin is very dark. It could be brightened, with metal polish. However, it has been left in its original state.
This hat pin is part of my personal collection, which has been accumulated over three decades. I have been a member of the American Hat Pin Society for decades, to continue to learn and associate with fellow collectors. However, it is now time for some of the treasures to find a new home!
